Cant download apk file from website

After all I found the problem thanks in part to CommonsWare advise. Directory where I put apks for downloads is protected by simpe auth. Phone's browser correctly asks (once) for username/password when browsing it but obviously forgets to send auth info when trying to download the file and that causes Unauthorized. Astro or another of file browser app is useful for finding the file after you download it from email, just tried it and it worked fine. The only errors came when I used any other text setting in email besides Unicode. I'm trying to have my apps available for download on a website, however, when I upload the APK file, it cannot be found by the browser. When zipping the APK, it is detected. However, not all phones can install from a ZIP - I have had mixed results. Why can't I simply upload an APK and have a URL point to it for a download?
